The Traditional Turkish Arts Department consists of five divisions of traditional Turkish Arts has the objective of giving education directed to the recent and future demands. The aim of the personal artistic design has to be creative rather than being repetitive or conservative. The education at the Department is supported through theory and applications. In addition, the programs provide knowledge and experience in the fields of conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage in Turkey.
The traditional Turkish arts education began in 1915 with the establishment of The School of Calligraphy Masters "Hattatlar Mektebi". Then it became Oriental Decorative Arts School "Şark Tezyini Sanatlar Mektebi" and in 1936 it became a department of Fine Arts Academy. The department consists of five main art branches such as Book - Binding, Tiles-Ceramics Design, Carpet-Kilim and Old Fabric Designs, Illumination-Miniature Design and Calligraphy Design. The purpose of the education is to teach our traditional arts and their conservation and restoration methods by giving necessary principals and skills to students who will produce designs for the demands of the present day according to our traditional values.
