When the adventure of photography started in the 15th Century, thanks to the technology, its development now reached to the level of digital technology in one lane; and in the other the use of photography as a media became more intensive in the system of visual communication with the variety of expositions and thus, education in this field was required and the educational institutes starting with Daguerre in the west, have started to appear.

Instead of producing "useful" and "handy" equipments developed thanks to the technology, our country prefered importing them; however, the most important requirement to carry out the function of photography in the society and art, education became institutional by the efforts of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

It was established in 1978 under the structure of Mimar Sinan University in order to able to perform the function of photograph for art and society. The photograph department is structured on three complementary basic concepts such as knowledge, creativity and technological process. Its pre-graduate and post graduate education programs aim to develop the students completely with regard to art and profession according to the scientific methods that include trial, inspection and realization processes.

While starting such on education in our country, the aim is –by saving the photography from being haphazard- to take it to an educational level, to reveal the creative ability, to develop the intuition, to train them to gain the right point of view and thinking by means of scientific methods which include the process of experiments, inspections and conclusions. Besides, it is aimed to train professionals to have their bachelor's degree and also post-graduate degree.

Our department is structured on the three basic concepts such as knowledge, creativity and technological process. Despite its 20-year-backround, we are proud of our graduates who are presently productive in most fields such as advertising, fashion, publication, television, education and art.
